When that crew went away, they didn’t go as reasonable men, they went because we were there. There’s something in our world that makes men lose their heads—they couldn’t be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black...

I've become convinced that genius is a vastly overrated commodity. I think this country is full of geniuses, guys and gals so bright they make your average card carrying MENSA member look like Fucko the Clown. And I think that most of them are teachers, living and working in small town obscurity because that's the way they like it.

You've a bit of garden dirt here."Keeley came down the path just in time to see Brian gently wipe her mother's face with a blue bandanna. The tearstains had her leaping forward like a mama bear to her threatened cub."What is it? What did you do?" Hissing at Brian, she wrapped an arm around Adelia's shoudler."Nothing. And that is why I think that in a sense music is the highest of the arts, because it really begins where the others leave off.

The question had obviously been bothering him for a while.
‘Y’know what,’ I said to him, ‘as long as they’re laughing, I don’t care.’
‘But why, Dad? Why would you want to be a clown?’
‘Because I’ve always been able to laugh at myself, Jack. Humour has kept me alive over all these years.’
And it’s true, y’know.
